If you've recently turned fifty, then don't despair because it's the new forty. Your fifties should be full of fun, family and making plans for your dream retirement. One of the biggest questions women over fifty have is what they should wear. Most know it's all about flattering fabrics and dressing for your age. What about hairstyles? Our hair is one of the first things people notice and the last thing you want is to give the wrong impression. Save the punky cuts and the ombres for women in their twenties. Here are the trendiest hairstyles for women over fifty.
The Pixie Cut
If you loved rocking the punk look back in the day, you'll enjoy the pixie cut. It's the older woman's "go to" style and there are loads of pixie looks to choose from. One of the most important things is to consider your face shape. If you have a long face, then add volume to the top. Square faces should be softened with round cuts that flatter your cheeks.

Long Layers
Layers are great for all face shapes and they add volume to your hair. If you want to add layers to your cut, then they should be subtle. You don't need loads of dramatic heavy layers, keep them below your earlobe. Be careful not to add short layers to the back of your hair or you'll end up with a retro mullet. Not a good look at all, so please don't go there.

Wavy Locks
Waves are timeless in their appeal and versatility. We've all tried the look before and whether you're a teenager or mature woman, they look great if done correctly. If you're lucky enough to be born with wavy hair, then maximise it with sea salt spray and volumising mousse. A loose perm can give you waves but you risk the poodle look if you don't go to a reputable stylist.

Classy Bobs
Bobs work for everyone and they can look really classy on mature women. It works for all skin tones and hair types. Women with straight hair should go for a sleek bob at chin length or a little bit longer. Wavy bobs are great if you have thick hair with volume because you don't want to spend ages straightening your hair every day.

Colour Me...Not?
Over the years women have desperately tried to hide their greys and colourists have made a fortune out of our fear of embracing the aging process. Today more women are choosing to keep their grey hair and go for a mature, classy look. It works perfectly for some, especially when it's teamed with silver blonde highlights.

Flattering Fringes
A good fringe can take years off any woman and they're popular with mature ladies because of this benefit. You can go for a side swept long fringe or choose a more traditional style. Fringes also distract attention from your neck, which can become saggy with age. Make sure it's not too heavy and choose one for your face shape.

Dark and Mysterious
If you choose to colour your hair, then think about your skin tone. It's common for women to choose a blonde shade when they want to cover up greys. However, if you're a natural brunette, then going back to your natural shade can make you look years younger and will flatter your skin tone.

Side Partings
Women with straight, thin hair should consider themselves lucky. It's the easiest type to maintain and requires little work. Thin hair can lack volume, but a side parting can give your locks a thicker look and flatters your face. You can add some volumising look to lift the hair, but don't use too much.

Tend to Your Texture
What do we mean by this? Well we've talked about wavy and straight hair, but what about curls? Your instinct might be to grab a straightener but hair can be damaged if it's exposed to heat long term. Nothing screams age like frizzy and damaged hair. Embrace your curls and seek inspiration from Kate Capshaw to get the perfect style.

Same Style but Shorter
Some of us are set in our ways and when we find something that works for us then why change it? If you've had the same style for years, then shorten it. Long hair can make you look older, but a shorter cut will always give a youthful look. Turning a long straight cut into a long bob can make a huge difference.
